Privacy Policy

dictate.app — Last updated: May 2026

Short version: Your voice never leaves your device while recording. Audio is sent directly to a transcription API over an encrypted connection, then immediately discarded. We don't store your audio. Ever.

What dictate.app is

dictate.app is a Windows desktop application that transcribes your voice and types the result wherever your cursor is. Press a hotkey, speak, done. No account is required to use the app. Audio is processed by Groq's Whisper API and the text result is injected locally.

Audio data

This is the most important section.

Transcription history

Transcription results (text only, never audio) are stored locally on your computer using electron-store. This data never leaves your device unless you manually copy or export it. You can clear your transcription history at any time from within the app.

What we collect

What we do not collect

Third-party services

dictate.app uses two external services:

We do not sell your data to any third party. We do not use advertising networks or tracking pixels.

Data storage and security

Transcription history is stored locally in your Windows user profile. It is not encrypted by default — standard Windows user account security applies. Audio is never written to disk by dictate.app. All data transmitted to external services uses TLS encryption in transit.

Your rights (GDPR & CCPA)

Because we collect minimal data, in most cases the only personal data we hold is your email address from a purchase. To exercise any rights — access, correction, deletion, or portability — email us at privacy@dictate.app and we'll respond within 30 days.

California residents: We do not sell personal information. You have the right to know what we hold and to request deletion.

EU/UK residents: The legal basis for processing is legitimate interest (analytics) and contract performance (licensing). You have the right to object, access, port, or erase your data.

Children

dictate.app is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
